Browns Turn Away Federals, 9-7
Jim Viox left his imprint on the 9-7 St. Louis win against the Chicago Federals. Viox, who finished 3rd in the AL in wins above replacement with 6.3 in 1996, went 3 for 5 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 3 runs and scored once. St. Louis reliever Craven Morehead picked up the win to move to 1-1. Ruben Quevedo suffered the loss. With the win, St. Louis upped its record to 80-55.

In the bottom of the eighth, the Browns surged ahead when Viox muscled his 10th home run of the season. The 2-run home run off Grant Bowler made it 9-7, St. Louis.

"Our guys are never satisfied," said St. Louis manager Jeff Patterson.
