Torriente Lifts Browns to 8-5 Win
The performance of Cristobal Torriente proved critical in helping St. Louis beat Chicago, 8-5. The Browns right fielder went 3-5 with a home run and a double. He scored 2 runs and drove in 4. Win Mercer earned the win for St. Louis. He lasted 8 innings, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits, while striking out 5. With the win, he raised his record to 22-8. Dave LaRoche earned his 17th save in 20 chances.

The Browns got a big at-bat from third baseman Billy Goodman, who in the bottom of the fifth hit a 2-run double. It was his 18th double of the season and put the Browns on top, 4-1.

"I'm just looking for a good pitch that I can hit well," said Goodman. "And not try to do too much."

St. Louis improves to 81-55 with the win. They lead their division by 11½ games.
