The Boston Americans got a sterling performance from pitcher Tom L Hughes, but the Memphis Red Sox still prevailed, 4-3. Hughes threw 7 innings of 3-hit ball. Tommy John got the win, improving to 3-3. He worked 7.2 innings, giving up 3 runs on 9 hits, while striking out 7 and walking 1.
Art Fletcher chipped in for Memphis, stroking a crucial 2-run single in the top of the eighth inning. For the game, the shortstop went 1 for 4. He drove in 2 runs.
"We can always improve and get better, but we're feeling confident after that win," said Fletcher.
The loss puts Boston at 16-12.
