Browns Shut Out Black Barons, 5-0 | In the 5-0 St. Louis win over Birmingham, the impact of Ozzie Smith was substantial. Smith, who finished 2nd in the AL in stolen bases with 22 last year, went 1 for 1 with 3 walks, while scoring 2 runs. The Browns raised their record to 17-9.
Roger Maris had a big 2-run double for the Browns in the bottom of the third inning. With St. Louis leading 1-0 and runners on 1st and 3rd, he got a fastball from Al Leiter and swatted a double to right. It was his 7th double of the season, and more importantly, it put the Browns ahead, 3-0.
"Win or lose, we always try to grind it out and stay even-keeled," Smith said in reaction to the win. | | | | |
