| Federals Lose By a Run at Memphis, 3-2 | The Chicago Federals got a sterling performance from pitcher Bob Welch, but the Memphis Red Sox still prevailed, 3-2. Welch threw 6 innings of shutout ball. Dilson Torres picked up the win in relief, improving his record to 2-3. Luis Mendoza was tagged with the loss. The Federals, now 62-90, have lost 4 straight.
Memphis took a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh inning. With two out, pinch hitter Chase Utley hit a 2-run home run that set the crowd abuzz.
