Houston designated hitter Willie Stargell had a good game, even if his team did not. The Eagles dropped a 7-6 decision to St. Louis at Sportsman's Park. Stargell was 3 for 4 with a home run, a double, and a walk, while adding 4 RBI and scoring once. St. Louis leads the Junior Circuit Fernando by 5 games.

With St. Louis trailing 4-3 and runners on 1st and 2nd, the Browns fortunes got a boost when center fielder Roger Maris turned a 1-2 fastball from Ted Gray into his 11th home run of the season. The hit scored 3 and put St. Louis up, 6-4.
