Pitcher Sonny Gray was a major reason the Browns emerged victorious. In 7.1 innings, Gray surrendered 5 hits, while striking out 8 and walking 2. He allowed 3 runs. The triumph puts St. Louis at 57-35 for the season.
Roger Maris had a go-ahead home run for St. Louis in the bottom of the first inning. With no one out and runners on 1st and 2nd, the three-time All-Star hit a 3-run home run off Joe Nathan. His 31st home run of the season made the score 3-0.
