Stars Sneak By Black Barons, 3-2 | Birmingham got a terrific performance from pitcher Al Leiter, but it wasn't enough to beat the Detroit Stars. Detroit won the Tiger Stadium contest, 3-2. Leiter threw 8 innings of 1-hit ball for the losing team. The win gives Detroit a season record of 54-43.
The Stars were down to their last out in the bottom of the ninth when first baseman Mule Suttles turned a first pitch fastball from Robbie Weinhardt into a 2-run home run. The walk-off home run sent a roar through the crowd and gave Detroit a thrilling 3-2 win.
Suttles called the win "a lesson in teamwork." | | | | |
