Cruise Heroics Not Enough in 7-5 Loss to Washington
The rain did not keep Washington and Kansas City from finishing their game.

The Washington Senators weathered an outstanding game by Kansas City left fielder Walton Cruise to topple the Monarchs, 7-5. Cruise hit 2 home runs, while adding 4 RBI and scoring twice. Washington pitcher Ben DeMott got the win, upping his record to 2-4. Lefty Williams got the loss. Jumbo Brown earned his 16th save in 18 chances.

In the bottom of the sixth, Washington first baseman Mickey Mantle gave his team the lead. With one out and runners on 1st and 3rd, The Commerce Comet hit his 9th home run of the year. Kansas City pitcher Lefty Williams surrendered it. With that, the Senators jumped in front, 6-5.

"We cashed in when we had the chance," said Washington manager Rickie E. Shaw.

Washington is now 52-71.
