Thrilling Win Pushes Birmingham to Next Round | The stakes were high at Wrigley Field today as two Awesome Bigley Baseball Association clubs looked to advance in the quest toward the World Series.
In the end, the Birmingham Black Barons knocked off the Chicago Federals in the October Madness, by a score of 2-1. After the one-game playoff win, the team will move on to the League Championship Series.
"We never stopped believing," said Birmingham first baseman Bob Watson. "All season long we expected to be going deep in the playoffs and we still feel that way. We're going to be a tough team for anyone to handle in the playoffs."
Watson went 3-for-4 in the win and took home the game MVP award.
Chase Castner, manager of the Federals, said he was proud of his club's efforts and said he believed that, with a few more breaks, it could have been his club advancing.
The Birmingham Black Barons will play against the Houston Eagles in the next round. Houston had a bye in the October Madness. The League Championship Series is scheduled to begin on October 4th, 1979. | | | | |
