| Red Sox Dealt 8-5 Loss by Birmingham | The Birmingham Black Barons beat the Memphis Red Sox, 8-5. Birmingham pitcher and Detroit, Michigan, native John Smoltz led the way. In 6 innings, Smoltz surrendered 2 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 1. He allowed 2 runs. Memphis falls to 0-3.
With two out in the bottom of the fifth, Adrian Beltre hit a go-ahead 2-run home run. It was his 2nd home run of the season and with it the Black Barons took a 4-2 lead.
