Thrilling Win Pushes Washington to Next Round | The Washington Senators celebrated wildly after a 6-3 win over the Kansas City Monarchs in the Play-in Round. At the center of the celebration was Smokey Joe Williams, who was instrumental in getting his team to the Division Round.
"I may get a lot of the credit, but it's a team sport," said the Washington pitcher. "Getting named MVP is nice, but even if I sucked and we made it to the next round, I would have been happy. That's all that matters at this time of year."
Williams threw 9 innings, with 8 strikeouts, while allowing 7 hits, no walks and 3 runs.
Kansas City manager Steve Hollis said it was a "tough blow" for his team, which had aspirations of winning the World Series this year.
The Washington Senators will play against the St. Louis Browns in the next round. St. Louis had a bye in the Play-in Round. The Division Round is scheduled to begin on October 2nd, 2002. | | | | |
