Bears Advance to Division Round | Don Drysdale was a picture of composure and ferocity on the mound during the Play-in Round.
Off the mound, with a 6-4 victory secured and his Milwaukee Bears having just eliminated the Chicago Federals, he couldn't help but smile.
"It was all business when I was on the mound, but now I can relax, knowing we made it through," he said. "I don't remember being as focused on any start in my career as I was tonight."
That focus paid off, as the Milwaukee starter was named MVP as he threw 7 innings, with 6 strikeouts, while allowing 6 hits, 3 walks and 4 runs.
Chicago manager Chase Castner gave Drysdale credit for the strong effort and said it's not how his club envisioned the season coming to an end.
"You tip your cap to them and try to learn from it," he said solemnly.
The Milwaukee Bears will play against the Birmingham Black Barons in the next round. Birmingham had a bye in the Play-in Round. The Division Round is scheduled to begin on October 6th, 1999. | | | | |
