Host Black Barons Drop Pivotal Game 5, Now Trail Series 3-2 | Game 5 was big. So was Smokey Joe Williams.
The Washington starter rose to the occasion at Rickwood Field today, leading the Senators to a crucial 4-2 victory over the Birmingham Black Barons. Williams threw 7 innings of 4-hit ball as the Senators won on the road to seize a 3-2 lead in the best-of-7 World Series.
It could have been a different outcome for Washington, had it not been for Don Slaught, the 32-year old catcher . Slaught contributed a 2-run triple in the top of the third inning to put Washington up, 2-0.
Black Barons manager Timothy Keene did not take questions after the game, telling assembled reporters that he would hold a press conference "if and when we win the World Series."
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Rickwood Field in Birmingham. The scheduled starters for the game are Mickey Harris for the Washington Senators and Jim Umbarger for the the Birmingham Black Barons. | | | | |
