Herndon was 3 for 4 with a home run and 2 singles. He drove in 2 runs and scored once. Cliff P Lee, the winning pitcher, improved to 7-6. He pitched 7 innings, giving up 9 hits and 2 runs, while striking out 3 and walking 1. With the win, St. Louis pushed its record to 31-21.
St. Louis shortstop Ozzie Smith produced at a critical juncture. It happened in the top of the eighth with Jose Leclerc on the mound and St. Louis leading 3-2. Smith drew a walk, driving in 1 run.
Smith told a local reporter: "My job is to go out and play as hard as I can."
