| Thrilling Win Pushes Detroit to Next Round Tuesday, October 4th, 2005 The Detroit Stars were counting on Jesse Tannehill to put forward a strong performance in the Play-in Round at Tiger Stadium. He certainly delivered.
With a solid 8.1 innings, Tannehill earned MVP honors as his team beat the Chicago American Giants 8-0 to advance to the Division Round.
"I tried to just think of it as any other game," said the Detroit starter. "But if we lose, we go home and I'd be lying if I said that didn't keep crossing my mind. That's motivation, for sure."
Tannehill also had 4 strikeouts, while allowing 5 hits, 2 walks and no runs.
While he wasn't willing to concede that the Stars are a superior team overall, Chicago manager Matt Reynolds said he had to give credit to Detroit for putting their best foot forward in a one-game format.
"They beat us straight up, that's all there is to it," he said.
The Detroit Stars will play against the Memphis Red Sox in the next round. Memphis had a bye in the Play-in Round. The Division Round is scheduled to begin on October 5th, 2005.
