| Wheeler Whitewashes Portland Tuesday, June 21st, 2005 Dan Wheeler of the Plano Mad Dogs was on top of his game today.
The 20-year-old tantalized the Portland Sea Dogs with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 12-0 shutout.
"He had the changeup working," Portland manager said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Plano hurler had 2 strikeouts, gave up 4 walks and surrendered 3 hits in his complete-game effort.
Wheeler told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
Running the numbers on Wheeler for the year, he has made 32 relief appearances, recorded 1 save and compiled a 7-13 won-lost mark with a 8.18 ERA. In pitching 99 innings, he has totaled 35 strikeouts and 85 walks. | | |
